Doug Ford plans to roll-back worker protection laws, including rules that made it illegal for businesses to force women to wear high heels on the job.

Bill 148 Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act, brought worker protections into the 21st century. As part of multiple new laws, businesses cannot require women to wear high heels on the job “unless it is required for the worker to perform his or her work safely”.

Women faced, and continue to face pressure to conform to sexist dress codes, with many losing shift work or their jobs if they did not wear high heels.

Other laws in Bill 148 include additional vacation days, paid sick leave and additional time off for victims of domestic abuse.

Doug Ford says he plans to scrap Bill 148 because it hurts businesses. Business lobby groups say the bill’s requirements, including limiting their ability to tell women how to dress, is “ill-considered” and “harmful to business”.

Meanwhile, Ontario businesses have never done better, with corporate profits currently at record highs.
