Doug Ford has appointed 31 Conservative MPPs to the position of parliamentary assistant, a role that comes with an additional salary of $16,300 per year, on top of normal MPP salaries.

The appointments come as Ford faces massive public backlash for appointing friends and insiders to government jobs, and his chief of staff leaving government.

The number of parliamentary assistants increased by 72 per cent, from 18 to 31 in total. There were 23 parliamentary assistants at the end of the Ontario Liberal term in office.

The addition of 13 parliamentary assistants will cost Ontario taxpayers $211,900 per year. Ford also appointed seven new cabinet minister for a total of 28, up from 21. These new cabinet ministers will cost Ontarians over $800,000 per year.
