Here’s what the North99 community wants for a COVID Recovery
Last week we asked our North99 community to tell us what issues and policies you want to be included in Canada’s COVID-19 Recovery plan.
Over 7,000 of you responded and made your voices heard. Here are the top 6 policies that North99 community members want us to advocate for.
We also asked you how you wanted us to push for these changes. Here’s what you had to say.
With your input, we’re excited to announce the launch of our new campaign: Rebuild Canada for the People, Not the 1%. We’re pushing the government to embrace 6 big policy items that will make sure we come out of this pandemic as a stronger and more equitable society.
Our community has fought for and succeeded in advancing bold progressive ideas in the past. But now we have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The federal government is planning its recovery plan as we speak. What comes out of their deliberations will shape Canada’s future for decades to come.
If you agree that it’s time for Canada to live up to its promise, to live by its values, and put people first, then sign this petition and call on our politicians to support a COVID-19 recovery that puts people first.
We need to make our voices heard. Lobbyists and right-wing groups are already trying to push for cuts to social services and bailouts for big corporations. If they are successful, our “new normal” will leave everyday Canadians even worse off than before.
It’s critical that we drown out the voices of special interests and corporate lobbyists, and build a recovery that puts people first, not the 1%.
Our campaign calls on the government to support the top policy choices that our community voted for. That means a Universal Basic Income, a massive Green Reconstruction Fund, and Universal Pharmacare – three bold changes that are demanded and supported by the people.
It also means a wealth tax on the top 0.1%, a crackdown on the $380 billion hidden in offshore tax havens, and a pandemic profits tax on billionaires and corporations getting richer off of our collective crisis. Three big tax reforms that will make the super-rich finally pay their fair share and curb runaway inequality.
We only have two weeks to put pressure on the government, so don’t put this off. Join our campaign and call on your government to rebuild Canada for the people, not the 1%.
