Demand paid sick leave and EI benefits for all workers during Coronavirus pandemic

The novel coronavirus is now officially a pandemic. Doctors and public health officials are urging those who show symptoms to self-isolate for at least two weeks.

However, missing work for extended periods is a luxury many Canadians cannot afford. People often must go to work, even if they’re sick, or risk losing their income altogether.

Prime Minister Trudeau has expanded the EI sick leave benefits, which is a great step in the right direction, but it is not nearly enough. These supports do not cover all workers, they only reimburse roughly half of your pay, and can take weeks to begin receiving.[1][2] And many provinces don’t have enough sick days to cover workers in quarantine.

To fix this, it’s vital provincial governments expand sick days to cover two weeks, and the federal government expand EI benefits to cover vulnerable workers, like those in the gig economy.

Will you send a message to the federal and provincial government to expand EI benefits and increase paid sick leave to two weeks?

The healthcare systems of countries with major outbreaks are being overwhelmed by the coronavirus. We must slow down the spread as much as possible if we want to avoid this outcome. Guaranteeing paid sick leave is a proven way to stop people from accelerating the spread of disease.

The cost of inaction be much higher if we don’t.. In Italy, lawmakers were slow to respond, now with hospitals over-capacity, they were forced to enact a national lockdown and even freeze mortgage payments. [3]

Workers should not have to choose between their livelihood and their health. There is a simple way to treat them with dignity and reduce the risk of spreading the disease. Sign the petition and demand that our leaders provide two weeks of paid sick leave for all Canadian workers.
