Give Canadians An Emergency Basic Income During the Coronavirus Pandemic
The coronavirus pandemic is costing Canadians, with businesses shutting down, workers losing wages, and lay-offs across the economy.
Canadians need support now to get through the coming months. We are calling on the Federal government to guarantee all Canadian adults a temporary universal basic income of at least $1,000 per month during the coronavirus pandemic.
This temporary universal basic income would be expensive, but could be funded for one month by borrowing at historically low interest rates, increasing our debt to GDP ratio by only 1.3 percentage points (from 33.25% to 34.55%).
With our economy spiralling into recession, Canadians losing their incomes, and interest rates at historic lows, we can afford to borrow to provide the direct support that Canadians and our economy desperately need during this emergency.
Sign the petition and ask the Prime Minister and your MP to implement an emergency universal basic income of at least $1,000 per adult.
