Tell Ford: Reduce Class Sizes and Fund a Safe Back to School Plan

30-person class sizes and one teacher inside poorly ventilated buildings with social distancing made practically impossible. Under Ford’s plan, that’s what many Ontario students will be facing when they go back to school in September.

While high school students will have smaller cohorted classes, kids from Kindergarten to Grade 8 will be returning to full classes with little change. [1]

In Israel, where they tried a similar plan, COVID-19 spread from schools to families and then to the broader community. They went from 100 cases a day to 1,500 daily. [2] Other countries have already learned from this mistake and are capping class sizes. Experts agree that small class sizes must be a priority for any back-to-school strategy. [3]

Smaller class sizes mean more teachers, support staff, resources and funding. But Doug Ford’s plan only commits $309 million, even though teachers told them they need much more to safely reopen.

We cannot pinch pennies when it comes to Covid-19. The safety of our kids, teachers, parents, and communities relies on a fully funded back to school plan. Will you sign this petition and call on Doug Ford to fund a real school reopening plan with reduced class sizes?
