Protect Seniors: End Private, For-Profit Long-Term Care Homes
Nearly 80 percent of all Canadian COVID-19 deaths are linked to long term care facilities.[1]
At one private care home in Quebec, officials found dead bodies and unfed residents in soiled beds. [2] Meanwhile, Chartwell Retirement Homes, one of the largest corporations in the industry, is hiring underpaid and unqualified staff. They are using loopholes in Ontario’s emergency legislation to maximize profit during a pandemic. [3]
The nurses and workers putting their lives at risk to help seniors are also being neglected. In one Ontario retirement home, they were given garbage bags instead of adequate protective gear.
The corporations that run private long-term care homes don’t care about the wellbeing of their residents or staff. They care only about profit. We need the government to intervene and take over the management of these homes.
Sign the petition and urge your government to end private, for-profit long-term care by making it public, just like healthcare.
